I don't think a lot of people understand why others get so obsessed over seemingly trivial and unnecessary entertainment. The average joe usually just watches it or reads it and doesn't give it a second thought. And those are the people I feel sorry for. They just take it on and what? They say it was okay. Which is fine, but can you tell me why? No. What did you like about it? What didn't you like about it? What did you learn from it? Those who do not ask themselves those questions are doomed to repeat mistakes and are doomed to not ever ask why, and that's not what the world needs right now.
I personally feel that the more you get into a good the story, the more you learn. You can watch and observe the character's choices and adventures that could help you make a good decision in the future. The people who can connect to the characters, feel what their feeling, and act on it are not only are learning, but its letting them know subconsciously that they are not alone. It also gives them something to hold on to, something to look forward to, and something to brighten their day.
The Legend of Korra is my greatest escape. So is Avatar, for the record. I connect to Korra and Toph more than any other character. Toph taught me a lot. She taught me that no matter what disability you have, you can power through and become something you always wanted to be. She also taught me to not let my parents define or rule over me, no more than usual anyway. She's tough, headstrong, and confident. With an intelligence to boot. She's everything I wish I was, and she's someone to strive for.
With Korra, I connect to her through her feelings of failure in her inability to airbend and connecting with her spiritual side. And I relate to her feelings of stubbeness and her belief she had to do the impossible alone. She reminds me that I'm never truly alone. I have people who want to help me. And I shouldn't fret if I don't get it at first. If I work hard, I can achieve all I have ever wanted.
It sounds sappy but it's the complete truth. Most people's role models are real people, and although I have real life role models such as P!nk, Ellen Degeneres, and Shane Dawson, I also have role models that have never existed. And why shouldn't I? Why should I be looked down on because I don't have much in my life that gives me an unprecedented freedom, hope, and Love? The Legend of Korra and Avatar the Last Airbender has changed my life for the better. And one day, I'm going to help change someone else's life for the better in the same medium. The people who can connect to something, the people who can analyze senerios, the people who ask why, are the future leaders of tomorrow. And if you think I'm crazy, then you just gotta deal with it.
